Costa Calma

The resort of Costa Calma is in the south of Fuerteventura and is a popular holiday destination for many European holidaymakers. The nearby zoo, ‘Oasis Park’ makes a fantastic day out for people of all ages and the beaches in and around Costa Calma are some of the most beautiful, and longest, in the Canaries.

Established back in the 1970’s, Costa Calma (Spanish for calm coast) has an abundance of good hotels, restaurants and bars, all of which have brought about a huge rise in tourism to the South of the island.

Located at the beginning of the Jandia peninsula, Costa Calma is a stunning holiday resort favoured very highly by both German and Italian nationals along with numerous other European tourists.
Accommodation in Costa Calma is typically hotels, most of which are either 4 or 5 star. The Hotel Rio Calma and Hotel Esmeralda are just two of the most popular with beach lovers and wind surfers. Self catering accommodation is also available, however hotel accommodation seems to be far more common.

Between the mile long stretch of beach and hotels there now exists a park where the flora and wildlife are listed as endangered species. This area is well kept and will protect the wildlife and fauna for many years to come.

Originally built around the small pueblo ‘Cañada Del Rio’ Costa Calma has now literally taken over the hill side and the original village is now difficult to see. Having said that, Costa Calma is still a beautiful resort and to make sure that development didn’t swamp the resort the built up areas are separated by a ‘green zone’ that runs the length of the resort.

With several small shopping areas, fantastic scenery and an even more amazing beach, Costa Calma is well worth a visit at any time of the year.
